About Sjoerd
When I was eighteen, I left for India alone with a backpack and my first camera. What started as a trip grew into a different way of seeing. After that, I increasingly sought out unique destinations, especially places that are different from what you know from daily life. Later, I found that same stillness in remote areas where I worked as a doctor. There, I noticed how strongly my work as a doctor and my photography are connected. In both, it is about observing, being present, and seeing what only reveals itself when you take the time.
Landscape photographer
As a landscape photographer, I am drawn to open areas where the horizon, emptiness, and rhythm define the image. In that simplicity, I begin to see more. My landscape photographs do not just show a place, but also something of the experience of it: space, silence, and slowing down.
Fine art photography
My work moves within fine art photography. As a fine art photographer, I create images that are intended to endure. In my nature fine art photography I look
for stillness, simplicity, and the power of places where nature and silence prevail — with great attention to composition, choice of materials, and finishing.
Expedition photographer
A significant part of my work takes place in the polar regions, where I travel as a doctor and take photographs during those journeys. In Antarctica, I sometimes stay in one place for a long time to observe what happens. That approach is reflected in my polar photography, in which silence, light, and space come together.
Drawing on my experience and enthusiasm for these regions, I am now also happy to share advice and insights with people who are considering a trip to these areas themselves.
