Continuing Education Trip Spitsbergen/North Pole
In the spring of 2027 (April 9–16, 2027), I will be organizing an exclusive, accredited continuing medical education course for doctors in Svalbard for the first time, together with my fellow expedition physician, Joris Uijt de Haag. During this trip, we will combine high-quality medical content with learning and reflection in one of the most remote and pristine areas of Europe.
For one week, the group will be immersed in the Arctic landscape, where silence, space, and nature inevitably invite you to slow down and reflect deeply. The educational program will take place aboard an expedition sailing vessel that will serve as the venue and facility for the course throughout the week.
A unique learning environment
This continuing education course has been developed for a broad group of physicians, including general practitioners, medical specialists, and emergency physicians. By striving for a diverse composition, we create a rich learning environment in which different perspectives and experiences converge.
Between the outdoor sessions, there is time for substantive, practice-oriented training tailored to the diversity within the group. The combination of medical development, relaxation, and nature makes this training intensive, yet an experience that participants will not soon forget.
Continuing education program
The continuing education program is compiled and supervised by us. We provide part of the training ourselves; in addition, participants also contribute content based on their own expertise and practical experience. This creates a program that is not only focused on knowledge transfer, but also on joint reflection and intercollegiate exchange.
The educational activities are divided over several sessions, spread throughout the week and aligned with the daily schedule. On days with intensive activities, the educational load is deliberately limited, so that there is room to let experiences sink in and to connect what has been learned to clinical practice.
Expedition & context
The continuing education course takes place at the end of the Arctic winter, a period when the landscape is still largely defined by snow and ice and spring is cautiously emerging. The light is slowly returning, while the wintry character of the region is still clearly present.
The conditions require flexibility and adaptability — qualities that are also of great importance in medical practice. This context is not a backdrop, but an essential part of the learning experience.
Role and responsibility
The trip and expedition are carried out by an external expedition organization, which is responsible for the ship, crew, safety, logistics, and activities.
We only organize the continuing education program and the accreditation and are not a tour operator.
No patient care is provided during this continuing education. The education is intended exclusively for BIG-registered professionals.
